I've always been a bit mystified that Chilean carmenere hasn't caught on the way Argentinian malbec has. Both tend to be hearty and bold with silky tannins, especially when the vintner has been judicious with the oak. Vina Ventisquero's Root:1 Carmenere ($13) is full-bodied and a bit plummy with a nice touch of minerality, a great match for prime rib and perhaps even mincemeat pie.BILL WARD
