An increase in gusty winds this evening could send the wildfire north ofSanta Barbara, Calif., racing out of control. A significant difference inpressure between a high building into the Northwest and lower pressure off theSouthern California coast will cause the winds to strengthen.The winds, which are classified as "Sundowner winds," will gust between 50and 70 mph through the first part of tonight. These winds could severely whipthe blaze, potentially pushing it toward homes. Tinder-dry vegetation acrossthe region will provide sufficient fuel for the wildfire.
KABC-TV reports that most of the blaze will have to be fought from the airdue to the lack of roads leading up to fire. Strong winds this evening couldkeep the water-dropping helicopters that have been battling the blaze earlytoday on the ground. Winds blowing erratically through the region's intricatecanyons will also pose another complication for firefighters.
Away from the wildfire, this evening's strong winds will create hazardoustravel through the Grapevine corridor of Interstate 5. Drivers of semi-trucksare especially urged to use caution. Winds could easily overturn or steer thesehigh-profile vehicles off roadways.
