Wind Increasing along New England Coast

February 25, 2010 at 8:25PM

It's happening, even as you read this. The storm is wrapping about two hundredmiles to the south of Cape Cod, and with each drop in the air pressure, thewind grows stronger. During the overnight hours, winds will increase to 30 to40 miles per hour in eastern New England, with gusts to 65 mph on the coast. This will cause pounding seas, flooding, and tree damage. No doubt there willbe numerous reports of power outages by daybreak Friday.

The storm is taking a very unusual path. It was moving toward the northwestThursday, but will turn toward the northwest Thursday night. Late Thursdaynight and Friday, the storm will make a complete loop, moving across interiorsoutheastern New York, northern New Jersey and then back over Long Island. Thisodd path is what will account for the extended period of high winds along theNew England coast.
