The two police officers who shot and wounded a suicidal man Sunday afternoon in Willmar, Minn., have been identified by the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is investigating the incident.

Matthew David Smith, 46, of Willmar, is still hospitalized at St. Cloud Hospital. His condition has not been released.

He was shot by officer Marco Vazquez, who has worked for the Willmar Police Department (WPD) for three years, and officer Anthony Haycraft, who has worked there for a year. Haycraft also worked for Lower Sioux Tribal Law Enforcement Services for the past two years.

The officers went to a home to check on a 911 call about a suicidal man about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The man was in the backyard holding a gun. At one point, both officers fired their weapons. No one else was hurt in the incident.

The BCA said it has interviewed Vazquez and Haycraft and is waiting to interview Smith. Willmar police do not use body cameras, and the officers' squad camera did not record the incident.
