Wild signs Fredheim, should make NHL debut vs. Avs

Russo here, although I'll be back on the clock so to speak Thursday after I return to town in the morning.

Wild likely won't announce which defenseman it is calling up until the morning. There's Tyler Cuma, Drew Bagnall, Jeff Penner, Chay Genoway and Kris Fredheim.

To recall Fredheim to make his NHL debut, he'd have to be signed to an NHL deal because he's currently on an AHL deal. But that is very much in the cards.

Fredheim, 24, is a former Canucks draft pick that played at Colorado College. He hails from Campbell River, B.C., and is a team-leading plus-7 with two assists in 15 games. We'll see. Any D recalled would be making his NHL debut, except Bagnall.

The Wild is going to have to call a defenseman up from Houston. The move should come soon, and I'll update this blog with the lucky fellow when the decision is made.

Marek Zidlicky didn't look too happy today. We caught up with him coming out of the dressing room. He said he had a headache, wouldn't play tomorrow but hadn't yet had a concussion test. That should be forthcoming. Meanwhile, Mike Lundin isn't ready to get back into a game situation yet, and that process hasn't been helped by the fact that the Wild hasn't had a full practice in days.

Yeo wouldn't say who would play in goal tomorrow. Backstrom has played well, but he has played a lot over a few time zones. Does he need the rest? On the other hand, he's hot and has usually played well against Colorado, Thursday's opponent.
