Wild's Backstrom nears deal with KHL team

September 19, 2012 at 5:47AM

Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom said he is close to an agreement to play for HC Dynamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League during the NHL lockout.

The Belarus team announced the signing Tuesday, although Backstrom said nothing was signed yet and that insurance issues and a work visa still needed to be finalized.

"If you wait 'til Christmas," he said, "you never know if there's going to be a spot for you."

Backstrom would have an out clause, allowing him to return to Minnesota if the lockout ends.
