Why the Mississippi River Is Flooding

November 2, 2009 at 8:25PM

Parts of the central and lower Mississippi River basin continue to flood, eventhough the rain is long gone. The main reason for the continued flooding is that the ground is completelysaturated and can no longer absorb any more water across large parts of theregion due to an excessively wet October.

Some areas have had over 400 percent of normal rainfall for the month ofOctober. St. Louis recorded their wettest October on record, with 12.38 inchesof rain. Monroe, La. received a whopping 20.54 inches of rain during the month.

An average October generally brings a little less than 4 inches of rainfall.

The good news is that the entire region should be basically rain-free throughmost of this week.
