Why California Chrome will - or won't - win Saturday

Why Chrome will win

1 He's clearly the dominant horse in the 3-year-old ranks, having won six straight races, impressively taking charge in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

2 His tactical speed should help keep him out of trouble, unless the other jockeys gang up on him.

3 Victor Espinoza has had 12 more years of experience since he lost out on the Triple Crown aboard War Emblem in 2002.

4 Someone has to win the Triple Crown sometime, right?

Why chrome will not

1 Since 2000, only two Belmont favorites have won.

2 The Belmont's past eight winners sat out the Preakness.

3 The last two horses that came to the Belmont with a chance to win the Triple Crown didn't see the finish line. Big Brown failed to complete the race (2008), and I'll Have Another was scratched (2012).

4 Since the last Triple Crown, 11 horses have won the Derby and Preakness only to come up short in the Belmont.
