White Bear writing contest deadline nears

High school students who plan to participate in the White Bear Center for the Arts' annual "Write Now!" contest have until March 14 to submit their work.

High school students who plan to participate in the White Bear Center for the Arts' annual "Write Now!" contest have until March 14 to submit their work.

The center will accept original essays, short stories, poetry and one-act plays composed by students who attend public, private or charter schools and live within the boundaries of the White Bear Lake and Mahtomedi school districts.

There will be two winners in each category, one in grades 9-10 and one for grades 11-12.

Participants are allowed to submit up to three poems provided they are on separate pages. Essays must be a minimum of 500 words but cannot exceed 1,000 words. Short stories must be at least 1,500 words, with a maximum of 2,500 words. There is no word limit for one-act plays, but stage directions must be included. All entries must be typewritten.

An application form, available on the center's website at whitebeararts.org, must accompany each entry. Applications must arrive at the center by mail or in person by 1 p.m. on March 14.

An awards ceremony and reading will take place at 7 p.m. May 5 at the White Bear Armory, 2228 4th St. in White Bear Lake. For more information, call 651-407-0597.

Art walk set for Friday and SaturdayGalleries and studios in downtown Stillwater will throw open their doors and hold receptions for exhibiting artists from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Stillwater Art Guild Gallery will hold live falcon demonstrations in conjunction with its "For the Birds" exhibit, which features photography, paintings, pottery and sculpture by more than 30 artists. The gallery also will announce the winner of its creative birdhouse competition.

Other participating galleries include Studios at Staples Mill, Tamarack Gallery, Alesci Gallery, the Little Parrot Art Sanctuary, Gallery 310 and Studio J Gallery.

MAHTOMEDI

Elbow Room trio to offer free concertSarah Olson, Sandy Waterman and Linda Paulson, the trio better known as Elbow Room, will perform a free concert of family-friendly jazz and eclectic standards at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wildwood Library, 763 Stillwater Road.

'Finding Nemo' is movie night featureEnjoy all the popcorn you can eat and a beverage as you watch the movie "Finding Nemo" Friday at the Central Park Indoor Amphitheater.

The computer-animated comedy drama produced by Pixar is the story about a clownfish kidnapped from his coral reef home and his timid father who must travel to Sydney and search Sydney Harbour to find him.
