Nicki Minaj at Grammys: Confessions, levitation and pyro/ Associated Press photo

It's the morning after the Grammys and I'm thinking: Where was Lady Gaga when they needed her?

I know, she was in the crowd, with a cane and her face covered by black netting. But the 54th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday needed a Gaga moment. The religious-themed "Roman Holiday" by Nicki Minaj, complete with a confession, levitation and pyro, made no sense. Katy Perry's warrior get-up didn't connect, and either did Rihanna trying to collaborate with Coldplay.

Where was the big pop production number?

As for the other performances, twice for Chris Brown is maybe two too many. Oh, I already said that in my Breammys report in today's newspaper. Seeing Dave Grohl on guitar during three different numbers is too much of a Foo thing. By contrast, double exposure for the spot-on Paul McCartney is always acceptable, and having Joe Walsh, Bruce Springsteen and Grohl join him at the end of the "Abbey Road" medley felt right.

Saluting electronica was the right thing to do but it was done the wrong way with the Foo Fighters, after Grohl declared victory for human musicians and dissed machine-made music during an acceptance speech, as a bridge from David Guetta to Deadmau5 seemed misguided.

As for surprises (as stated in my full Grammy report), it's hard to believe that the preponderance of the 12,000 members of the Recording Academy knew about Bon Iver. Maybe a segment of voters is not participating in this category. For the second consecutive year, the hip choice prevailed (it was jazzer Esperanza Spalding last year). I thought the more high-profile Nicki Minaj or especially the Band Perry were more widely known and therefore more likely to win.

Well, can't predict them all accurately — unless it involves Adele. Because she could have had it all — and did.
