Where the Snowstorm Goes Monday

March 20, 2010 at 7:26PM

Spring officially got underway Saturday, but that did not stop Mother Naturefrom dropping snow and ice across the southern Plains. The wintry weather willpersist into Sunday from southwestern Missouri into northwestern Louisiana.Where will the snowstorm head after that? The answer is actually nowhere.

The storm will become detached from the fast-moving jet stream Sunday, shuttingoff the flow of fresh cold air into its back side. As a result, an end to thesubstantial snowfall will come by Sunday night.

The storm will then drop plain rain from the Ohio Valley to the NortheastMonday. Snowflakes will still be produced, but only over the higher elevationsof the southern Appalachians. It is not out of the question that the snowaccumulates a bit on these mountains.

It will likely not be until Tuesday and Wednesday when more significant snow orice may accompany the storm. Cold air plunging into northern New England wouldset the stage for the wintry mess.
