What to do if you drive into water

April 16, 2008 at 4:31AM

If your vehicle plunges into water and is submerged, the State Patrol recommends taking quick action to get out. Lt. Mark Peterson told the Star Tribune Fixit columnist that if opening doors and windows fails, people in the vehicle should turn to breaking out a window.

In columns published in August and September, experts recommended sharp tools such as a nail or screwdriver or specialty devices such as a LifeHammers or a spring-loaded window punch.

If your vehicle isn't completely underwater, Peterson said you'd be better off staying in the vehicle if there are strong currents, such as in flash flooding.
