Wet weather delays reopening of Braemar Golf Course in Edina until 2019

The scheduled reopening of a popular municipal golf course in Edina has landed in the rough, with wet weather to blame.

Braemar Golf Course, which closed in October 2016 for a total makeover, likely will not reopen until the spring of 2019, course general manager Joe Abood said Wednesday.

That's about six months later than the initially anticipated resumption date of August or September 2018.

Abood disclosed the delay Tuesday to the City Council and said an exceptionally wet summer and fall meant the contractor "missed the seeding window" for the 18-hole course.

He now anticipates seeding to start in May, but he said the contractor will be ready in mid-April if conditions are agreeable.

The course in the southwestern corner of the city just turned 50 years old and "was showing its age," prompting the renovation, Abood said. "It just needed to get done."

Along with your everyday duffers and others hoping to break 80, Braemar has been the home of 18 leagues, as well as being a practice course for the Minnesota Gophers. Also, Edina and other high schools practice and play matches there.
