West news briefs: Wayzata council approves golf cart ordinance

WAYZATA

Council approves golf cart ordinanceEarlier this month, Wayzata City Council members unanimously approved a new ordinance allowing recreational vehicles such as golf carts on some city streets.

The ordinance will allow bayside restaurants to deliver meals to docks via golf cart or utility-terrain vehicles (UTVs) and residents in two single-family neighborhoods -- Enchanted Woods and Locust Hills -- to use them within their neighborhood to get to lake accesses or nearby docks.

Drivers must have a valid state driver's license and can only be on streets with posted speeds of 30 miles per hour or less. Owners must get a $75 annual permit with the police department.

EDINA

Reserve a spot at Edina's appraisal fairFind out the value of that family heirloom or garage sale find at the annual antique appraisal event sponsored by the Edina Historical Society on Aug. 10.

The event, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Historical Society, 7500 York Cooperative, will feature well-known local appraisers Bonnie Lindberg and James Marrinan giving oral appraisals. They will also provide interesting facts about items' historic uses and unique qualities.

Space is limited to 100 items, and the popular event has sold out the past two years. To reserve a spot, send a check payable to the Edina Historical Society for $5 per item, limit five items per person. Mail it to the Edina History Museum, 4711 W. 70th St., Edina, MN 55435.

MINNETONKA

Agates on display at 'Celebration of Agates'An international gathering of dealers and experts on agate collecting are convening "A Celebration of Agates" Thursday through Sunday in Minnetonka.

The Minnesota Mineral Club is hosting the four-day event in conjunction with the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies and the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies.

It will be held at Lindbergh Center at Hopkins High School, 2400 Lindbergh Drive in Minnetonka. Seminars will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday; register at www. minnesotamineralclub.org.

The agate show will run from Friday through Sunday. Hours are noon to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Forty-two dealers will be on hand, and at least 80 different agate collections will be on display.

Admission to the agate show is $5 per person, with children accompanied by an adult admitted for free.

GOLDEN VALLEY

DMV office reopens on Aug. 1The Golden Valley Department of Motor Vehicles office that closed last year after an employee was accused of stealing money will reopen on Aug. 1 with new procedures, policies and employees.

The office is on the first floor of City Hall, and on opening day there will be an open house from 8 to 9 a.m. Normal office hours are Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Registration and licensing of motor vehicles, boats, snowmobiles and ATVs, fishing and hunting licenses, and notary public services will be available.

League announces 2 forums on primaryThe League of Women Voters will sponsor a forum at 7 p.m. today at the Golden Valley City Hall, 7800 Golden Valley Road.

Featured will be candidates for the 4th Judicial District Seat 22 in the August 14 primary. The candidates are Steve Antolak, Elizabeth Cutter, Diane Krentz and Deborah Russell.

Then on Thursday at 7 p.m., also at the Golden Valley City Hall, there will be another forum for candidates for Hennepin County commissioner in District Two, also vying in the primary. Nine candidates have filed for this office: Leslie Davis, Steve Dehler, Rolf Erickson, Linda Higgins, Tonia Johnson, Kathleen Murdock, Paula Pentel, Roger Smithrud and Blong Yang.

The forum will be cablecast live on Channel 12 and rebroadcast Sunday and Tuesday at 8:30 and 11 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON

Nominations sought for disability awardsThe city Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for businesses that have excellent practices in employing people with disabilities as a way to recognize Disability Employment Awareness Month.

STEP needs donations of school suppliesThe STEP program is collecting back-to-school supplies for children in the St. Louis Park schools through Aug. 17 and will distribute them to the 500 children entering grades K-12.

Donations needed include two-pocket folders without prongs; college and wide-ruled notebooks; college-ruled paper; composition notebooks; three-ring zippered binders; Crayola colored pencils in a 12-color box; glue sticks; highlighters; thin dry-erase markers; Crayola washable pan paints; zippered pencil pouches; pencils and red ballpoint pens; erasable pens in blue and red; Sharpie permanent markers; adult-size scissors; 9-by-12 sketchbooks, and scientific calculators.
