West news briefs: Plymouth hosts 5K run/walk

City hosts 5K run/walkPlymouth will host the first annual "Paint the Pavement" 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday.

The race will take place at 9 a.m. at the Hilde Performance Center, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Pre-registration costs $17 a person; on-site registration is $20. Children under age 9 are free. Long-sleeved T-shirts will be provided and proceeds go to the Plymouth Arts Council.

Police department offers 'File of Life'The Plymouth Police Department is offering residents a tool to help give lifesaving information to emergency responders. The File of Life gives responders critical information when victims aren't able to speak for themselves such as their medical history, allergies and emergency contact information.

To pick up a free File of Life card and holder, go to the Police Department at 3400 Plymouth Blvd. between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays or 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Colonial Church packs meals for HaitiColonial Church of Edina on Saturday will again be packing meals for Haiti.

Fall leaf pickup set for SaturdayThe city is asking residents to have leaves and yard waste in compostable bags and placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on Saturday. The city said it won't be collecting any other items that day.

Welcome group invites membersThe Newcomers Club of the Southwest Suburbs meets the fourth Tuesday of the month to help new Minnesota residents make new friends and enjoy new activities.

As a civic and social club, the group meets as a large group but breaks into smaller interest groups each month.

The next meeting is Nov. 27 at the regular meeting place, Dunn Bros. Coffee at 8107 Eden Prairie Road in Eden Prairie.

Women's Club celebrates 50 yearsThe Bloomington Federated Women's Club is celebrating it 50th year next Wednesday.

A social hour starts at 11:15 a.m., with lunch at 11:45 followed by a program at Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington, 6300 Auto Club Road.

STEP seeks donations, holiday volunteersThe St. Louis Park Emergency Program (STEP) will distribute toys in December and needs volunteers to donate funds, toys or time.

New toys are needed for children up to age 10, and $10 Target gift cards will give parents the ability to buy gifts for their teenagers.

Town hall meeting to be held SaturdayThe Edina City Council will hold a town hall meeting from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday in the Fireside Room of the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square.

Residents are urged to attend to ask questions and share their views about issues facing the city.

Hometown heroes tribute to veteransResearcher Marshall Schwartz will tell stories of young men from Edina who were killed in action during wartime at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 at the Edina Senior Center.

Schwartz did the research in connection with the proposed veterans memorial at Utley Park and has compiled the biographies of 32 young men in a book.

The program is cosponsored by the Edina Veterans Memorial Committee, the Edina Senior Center and the Edina Historical Society. The event is free and light refreshments will be served.

The presentation is sponsored by the League of Women Voters Edina.

JazzMN Orchestra salutes New OrleansThe JazzMN Orchestra will present "The Big Easy" in a concert of New Orleans jazz music Nov. 17.

The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Hopkins High School Performing Arts Center, 2400 Lindberg Drive in Minnetonka. A reception will be held for concertgoers with JazzMN musicians after the concert.

Dinner and auction are part of parish festSaints Peter and Paul Catholic Church is holding its Parish Festival on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, Turkey Bingo starts at 2 p.m., followed by turkey sandwiches. The day will wrap up at 4 p.m. with drawings, a silent auction and quilt selections.
