West metro town briefs:

The Navarre Community Initiative is looking for residents to donate hostas to fill gardens at the Navarre Playground Park.

The group will host a drop-off from 10 a.m. to noon June 7 at the park on Lyric Avenue and Shadywood Road, just north of the Navarre parking lot. Any variety of hostas as well as lilies will be accepted. Free refreshments will be provided.

Volunteers also are needed to help plant the hostas from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, e-mail Navarreto day@gmail.com.

The city of Edina's May online discussion at www.SpeakUpEdina.org will focus on the city's Senior Center.

The city wants to know whether or not residents are members, if they will join the center when they are eligible, what they think its future is and what kind of recreation opportunities they believe should be offered there.

The discussion will be open until May 31. Paper feedback forms are available at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square.

Golden Valley is taking applications for its new Teen Committee, which will advise the city and promote teen issues and activities.

Meetings will begin in September and be held monthly through April. Meetings will be at 6 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month at Brookview Community Center.

Starting June 6, the city of Minnetonka is offering the chance to canoe Minnehaha Creek this spring.

For $45, up to three adults can canoe a 4-mile stretch of the creek from the headwaters at Grays Bay in Minnetonka to County Road 73 (Hopkins Crossroad) at the border of Minnetonka and Hopkins.

The fee includes canoe rental, instruction as needed and a shuttle service back to the starting point. The program is offered on Saturdays and Sundays through mid-July, and on Friday evenings starting June 6.

Minnetonka residents are invited to attend an open house June 2 on the Southwest Light Rail project.

The open house will take place from 5-6 p.m. at the Minnetonka Community Center, 14600 Minnetonka Boulevard. After the open house, the Minnetonka City Council will hold its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Minnetonka Community Center; the meeting will include a public hearing about the Southwest Light Rail project. The council will take final action on the municipal consent plans at its regular meeting June 23.

The Watoto Children's Choir from Africa will perform in Minnetonka on Friday, May 23, as part of a tour of 13 Minnesota cities.

The children are ambassadors for orphans in Africa and each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents.

The other Minnesota cities the choir will perform in are: Menomonie, Moose Lake, Woodbury, Rosemount, Renville, Blue Earth, Stillwater, Lake Elmo, Farmington, Sartell, Perham and Pelican Rapids. All performances are free and open to the public.

Minnetonka Public Works will host a special one-day drop-off for Minnetonka residents to get rid of unwanted items during spring cleaning.

The drop-off will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at 11522 Minnetonka Boulevard. For a complete list of items that are accepted and associated costs, go to www.eminnetonka.com. Electronics, garbage and household hazardous waste won't be accepted.

The Richfield Spartan Foundation, which raises money to support Richfield High School students who participate in sports and arts programs and who excel in school, is holding its 25th annual Spartan Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday, June 16, at Crystal Lakes Golf Course in Lakeville.

The nonprofit foundation is marking its 25th anniversary and has given out fifteen $1,000 awards this year.

The Richfield Community Center, at 7000 Nicollet Av. S., has Metro Dining Club cards available for sale at $24.

The cards, which are good through May 2015, are good for two-for-one dining at 166 restaurants in the metro area. The cards can be used for breakfast, lunch or dinner once a month at each restaurant. South of the River dining cards are still available for $10 and are good until October 2014.

The group performs at senior residences, community centers, churches and community events.

Dancers must be at least 55 and have previous tap dancing experience and an interest in learning more. Practices are held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays at the Lenox Community Center, 6715 Minnetonka Blvd., St. Louis Park. The performance schedule runs from March through December.
