West metro skiers were well-represented in last week's state Alpine ski meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
Bloomington Jefferson senior Brenna Murray concluded her prep career in style, winning the girls' individual state championship. She gradually climbed the leaderboard each year since falling as a freshman.
In her final prep meet, temperatures soared into the 40s, but Murray lucked out by running sixth in the morning and seventh in the afternoon, posting the fastest time both trips down the course.
"I was lucky where I started," said Murray, who had a winning time of 1:13.39. "The snow was softer and there were more ruts the later you went out."
Runner-up Kiltie Finsand of Edina had the second-fastest time in both runs, finishing in 1:13.81. Her starting position was eight spots behind Murray, who finished 12th as a sophomore and fifth last season.
Minnetonka won the girls' team championship with 149 points, nine more than the Jaguars. It is the Skippers' first team title since winning the slalom crown in 1993.
Minnetonka's boys' team was second behind St. Thomas Academy, which won its third consecutive title.
In the Nordic skiing state meet also at Giants Ridge, Minneapolis Southwest and Minnehaha Academy tied for second behind Duluth East in the boys' competition. The Lakers were awarded the silver medals after winning a tiebreaker.
