WATERTOWN-MAYER

Superintendent leaving after 10 yearsAfter 10 years leading Watertown-Mayer schools, Superintendent Karsten Anderson is leaving for Red Wing.

The Red Wing school board approved the hire last week while Watertown-Mayer board members discussed starting a job search. Anderson beat out 36 candidates to replace Red Wing Superintendent Stan Slessor, who is retiring.

"We were looking for someone to continue with the warm, personable character of our current superintendent," said Red Wing Board Chair Heidi Jones, adding that Anderson's experience as a superintendent also made him stand out.

Red Wing, a 2,800-student district, will approve Anderson's contract March 7. In Watertown, his salary was $120,000.

"He's led us through good times in the mid-2000's ... and recently in tough times," Board Chair John McCain said.

The district had successful public votes on levies in 2001 and 2005. But in recent years, it's had declining enrollment, three years of budget cuts and a failed levy last fall.

Anderson will leave the 1,500-student west-metro district, where he has spent half his education career, on July 1.
