West metro school briefs: Wayzata 'Moment in Time' concerts coming up

WAYZATA

'Moment in Time' concerts coming upWayzata High School's choirs will present their "Moment in Time" concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday in the Wayzata High School Auditorium. The concert features pop, Broadway and jazz from all decades throughout the 20th century.

Highlights include an arrangement of Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," featuring senior Paul Kinkade, and "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got that Swing," featuring senior Thomas Strommen as jazz saxophone soloist.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens and will be available at the door or by calling 763-745-6907. The ticket office opens at 6:30 p.m. and auditorium doors open at 7 p.m. Wayzata High is located at 4955 Peony Lane N. in Plymouth.

All Wayzata High choir alumni are invited to join in the finale, "Good Old A Cappella."

Mock auto crash planned on May 18Public Safety agencies in Hennepin County and the city of Plymouth are partnering with Wayzata High School to stage a mock crash for the student body at 1 p.m. on Friday at the school.

The mock crash will depict the aftermath of a two-car wreck involving the use of drugs or alcohol and texting. A speaker from Minnesotans for Safe Driving will wrap up the event with a presentation on her own tragic accident that was a result of distracted driving.

Nearby neighborhoods will hear emergency sirens in the area shortly after 1 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON

Washburn elementary principal honoredJon Millerhagen, principal of Washburn Elementary School in Bloomington, has been named Minnesota's 2012 National Distinguished Principal.

The award is presented by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals Association and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. One principal is honored annually in each state.

The program was established in 1984 to highlight the importance of exemplary elementary and middle school principals in achieving educational excellence for elementary and middle school grades.

RICHFIELD

Blessed Trinity stages playBlessed Trinity's eighth-grade class and its sixth- and seventh-grade chorus will present "Cinderella's Glass Slipper" on Friday at the Academy of Holy Angels' Starlight Theater, 6600 Nicollet Av. S. in Richfield.

MINNEAPOLIS

Breck team takes third at nationalsThe Breck mock trial team finished third among 46 teams competing at the 2012 National High School Mock Trial championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

Teams from 42 states competed in the two-day tournament. Junior Marielos Cabrera won an All-American Witness Award.

This was the Breck team's third consecutive trip to nationals.

BSM robotics team to compete in MexicoThe robotics team of Benilde-St. Margaret's Advanced Competitive Science Program has qualified for an international competition, the RoboCupRescue tournament.

It is not only the sole program from the United States to participate, but also the only group as low as the high-school level selected for the tournament.

Ten 2012 BSM graduates will compete in the tournament June 18-24 in Mexico City. They were selected based on results in similar competitions, as well as submission of a technical paper.

ST. LOUIS PARK

Ice cream social set for SundayThe 19th annual Children First Ice Cream Social is set for 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Wolfe Park next to the St. Louis Park Rec Center at 3700 Monterey Drive.

Free ice cream from Sebastian Joe's and kosher ice cream courtesy of Byerly's will be served. Entertainment will include crafts, a kids' garage sale and a bike rodeo.
