West metro school briefs: Applications sought for Eden Prairie scholarships

The Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools will administer four endowed and two reunion scholarships for Eden Prairie High School seniors this spring.

Scholarship applications are now available for:

• The Holasek-Griffiths Scholarship in Computer Science, Engineering and Business ($2,750 per year, renewable for an additional three years).

• The Griffiths Family Scholarship in Business, Manufacturing and Engineering ($4,000 per year, renewable for an additional three years).

• The Griffiths Family Scholarship in Health Sciences ($4,000 per year, renewable for an additional three years).

• The Randell D. Voas Memorial Scholarship ($500, nonrenewable).

• The Class of 1973 Spirit Scholarship ($1,000, nonrenewable).

Applications are due by April 15. All scholarships will be awarded at a cere­mony at the school on May 15. Application forms are available at www.foundationforepschools.org and in the school's Career Resource Center.

Hopkins High School has named the most outstanding female and male athletes to represent the class of 2014. Erin O'Neil was chosen as the Athena athlete and Terrance Bowers was chosen as the Apollo.

O'Neil was a key member of the Hopkins girls' hockey team, which posted a 21-5-0 record during the 2013-14 season. O'Neil, a goalie, was named to the Star Tribune's All-Metro First Team and was also recently tabbed as the state's top senior goalie at the Ms. Hockey Awards Banquet. She has also represented her country as a member of the United States Under-18 team.

During the spring, O'Neil captains the Hopkins softball team. Next year, she will continue to pursue her athletics goals as a member of the Boston University women's hockey team.

Bowers has also experienced his share of success for the Royals. A member of the Hopkins football and track and field teams, Bowers is a three-time All-Lake Conference first team selection and was an all-state honoree during his senior season.

Wayzata Public Schools Community Education is offering a five-week, online class based on the book "How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk," from April 15 to May 19.

This class is an opportunity to discover how to use mutually respectful communication as parents navigate discipline, dealing with teenagers' emotions, encouraging their cooperation and problem-solving.

The class will consist of five weekly forums and two online chats. The two chats will be scheduled with participant input; weekly forums will conclude each Monday. The book is included in the class fee.
