West metro news briefs: Hopkins band marks 30th anniversary

The Hopkins Westwind Concert Band will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111 Mainstreet in Hopkins.

Conductor emeritus Don Bates will take the podium for several pieces, and then interim conductor Scott Kosloski will take over.

The Westwind Big Band will entertain before the concert.

The St. Louis Park Senior Program and Parktacular 2013 will sponsor "An Evening in Paradise" Thursday, June 13, at the Marriott Minneapolis West, 9960 Wayzata Blvd.

The event begins with registration and a social hour at 4:30 p.m. Dinner will be at 5:30, followed by music and dancing with the Cyril Paul Calypso Monarchs. A door prize drawing will be held at 7:45 p.m.

The event will be held at Bunker Hills Regional Park Reserve in Andover. All participants will get a commemorative T-shirt and finisher's medal. Refreshments are available before and after the race.

Hennepin County ­Sheriff Rich Stanek will speak to the Republican Seniors of Minnesota luncheon meeting on Tuesday, June 4.

Stanek will discuss his experiences as a member of President Obama's Gun Control Conference in Washington, D.C. He also will cover the question of "sanctuary cities" and other law enforcement issues.

The seniors' meeting begins at 10 a.m. with a business session, followed by the guest speaker. A noon lunch is served from a menu ranging in price from $6 to $11 per person. There is a minimum basic charge of $3 for those not ordering lunch.

The Edina Democratic Forum will present Tom Berg, a Minneapolis attorney who was a state legislator during the 1970s, talking about the so-called "Minnesota miracle" on Tuesday, May 28.

Berg will discuss how, "through friendships and cooperation," policy and program changes paved the way for the "miracle."

The session will be held at Davanni's Pizza meeting room at 5124 Gus Young Lane in Edina. A social hour starts at 6:30 p.m. and the forum at 7 p.m.

The Eden Prairie Human Rights and Diversity Commission gave out its annual Human Rights award on Tuesday to Hammer Residences, Inc., an Eden Prairie nonprofit serving adults and children with developmental disabilities throughout the Twin Cities.

The award is given each year to an individual or business that has made significant contributions to the city in the areas of human rights and diversity.

A wine-tasting event will take place next month to support the nonprofit Wayzata Community Sailing Center.

The sixth annual "Wine on Wayzata Bay" will take place from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday, June 28, at the Wayzata Yacht Club. It will include more than 150 wines, hors d'oeuvres from local restaurants, live music, a silent auction and sailboat rides.

The city of Plymouth will hold an environmental quality fair from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Zachary Lane Elementary School.

Participants will learn about animal habitat, recycling, insects, trees, energy conservation, gardening and water.

Pizza will be available for a small donation. To help make this a zero-waste event, visitors should bring their own water bottles and bags to carry home materials they pick up at the fair.

The annual rummage sale will be held at St. George Catholic Church, 133 N. Brown Road in Long Lake, on June 6-7.

The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 7.

Friday is "Bag Day," when all the items you can stuff in a shopping bag are sold at $4 per bag, and large items and "better goods" are half price.
