MAPLE PLAIN

Decontamination unit tested

Three Rivers Park District has begun using a decontamination unit on a pilot basis at the public boat access to Lake Independence in Baker Park Reserve.

The unit was purchased in June with a $25,000 Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Grant from Hennepin County, and began operating the July 4th weekend. Grant funds also support training of park district staff on how to use the equipment.

Lake Independence was chosen as the testing site because of an infestation of zebra mussels found in there in September 2014. The decontamination unit is being used primarily on boats leaving the lake that represent a high risk of transporting aquatic invasive species — watercraft that have been in the water for more than 24 hours or are going to another water body within 24 hours, watercraft with water an inspector can't see and watercraft that have attached aquatic invasive species.

The decontamination unit uses hot water to kill zebra mussels that may be present on or within watercraft.

The Park District operates the unit primarily on weekends.
