Weigh TV recycling options

April 17, 2009 at 3:25PM

There are all kinds of options when recycling an old TV set.

Check Rethink Recycling (www. rethinkrecycling.com) for details about facilities that accept TVs for recycling. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency also tracks this information as part of the Electronics Recycling Act (www.startribune.com/a/?4419; or call 651-296-6300). Once you find a nearby site, be sure to call to verify the information. Most charge a fee.

Residents from the following areas are not charged a fee:

• Carver County Environmental Center in Chaska (952-361-1835).

• Hennepin County Recycling and drop-off centers in Bloomington and Brooklyn Park (612-348-3777).

• Washington County Hazardous materials collection in Oakdale (651-430-6655).

• Minneapolis residents who have garbage and recycling pickup by the city are not charged for TV pickup when the set is left out with recycling.

Some retailers such as Best Buy (www.bestbuy.com/recycling) and Office Depot (www.officedepot.com/techrecycling) offer tech recycling. Best Buy accepts TVs with screens up to 32 inches (but no consoles) for a fee of $10, which is immediately reimbursed with a $10 Best Buy gift card. Office Depot accepts small televisions for a fee of $5 to $15 depending on the size.

Some TV manufacturers will take back their products and safely dispose of them for free. They include Sony (www.sony.com/recycle), Samsung (www.samsung.com/recyclingdirect; also Wal-Mart house-brand models) and LG (www.wm.com/lg; also Zenith and Goldstar). Some will take other brands for a fee. Enter your ZIP code at the websites to find locations near you or call 1-877-439-2795. Take Back My TV (www.takebackmytv.com) has more information about the program and other makers.
