Turns out that this week's snowfall was just a tease: A bigger dump is on the way for the weekend, with some parts of southern Minnesota in line to get 6 to 10 inches of snow, the National Weather Service said.
The Twin Cities metro area, at the northern edge of the snowfall area, could pick up 1 to 6 inches Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning, the National Weather Service in Chanhassen said. In the north metro, Anoka County is likely to see 1 or 2 inches, but to the south, 4 to 6 inches is forecast in Dakota and Scott counties.
A winter storm warning is in effect for much of southern Minnesota, including Rice and Goodhue counties just south of the metro area. Cities in the warning Worthington, Mankato, Rochester and Red Wing. Most of the Twin Cities metro area is under a winter weather advisory.
Six to 10 inches of snow, along with ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch, are possible in the warning area, with winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour blowing accumulated snow around Saturday night and Sunday, making travel especially difficult along Interstate 90 and along Interstate 35 between the Twin Cities and the Iowa border, the Weather Service said.
The Twin Cities metro area, which received 1 to 2 inches of snow Wednesday, should escape the brunt of the weekend storm. Less than an inch of snow is expected along a line from Willmar to St. Cloud and Hinckley, the weather service said.
Behind the storm, a frigid week is expected. High temperatures are forecast for the 20s Monday through Thursday, with lows in the teens. The sun will make an appearance Monday before clouds move back in Tuesday.
