Weekend farm 'summit' aims to protect water

The Izaak Walton League and the Freshwater Society are holding an Agriculture and Water Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in Bloomington. Called "Keeping Water on the Land for Conservation and Production," the session, which is open to the public, hopes to bring together conservationists, farmers, researchers, students and others to protect water resources while ensuring productive farms. Among topics: agricultural drainage, strategies for conserving water in soil and reducing the flow of nitrogen to surface waters. Fly fishing show More than two dozen national and regional fly-fishing and fly-tying celebrities and more than 40 seminars and demonstrations are on tap Friday (2:30-7 p.m.), Saturday (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) at the Great Waters Fly-Fishing Expo at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel. Among the features are free fly-casting lessons and a field trip to the Vermilion River and plenty of fly-fishing gear and watercraft.
