Weather causes huge delays at NYC area airports; flights canceled across country

July 1, 2013 at 9:50PM

NEW YORK — Thunderstorms in the New York City area have caused flight delays of up to three hours at local airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the biggest delays are at John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.

New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport reported delays of up to 90 minutes.

The National Weather Service says the severe weather also is causing flash floods on highways and streets in the New York area.

The New York metropolitan area is the busiest U.S. travel market.

Hundreds of flights were canceled across the country this morning because of the weather.
