Walz cool on endorsements, except for Clark

Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Walz said he generally doesn't plan to endorse for governor because "I don't have an inflated vision of my own personal opinion on other people."

Politicians often face a delicate dance when offering endorsements and support for other candidates. Earlier this week, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar endorsed fellow Democratic Iron Ranger state Rep. Tom Rukavina in his bid for governor. On Wednesday, Hot Dish got a chance to ask 1st District U.S. Rep. Tim Walz if he planned to endorse for governor. "I've stayed out of it, and it's probably simplified my life," said Walz, a Democrat from Mankato. "To be very honest with you, I don't have an inflated vision of my own personal opinion on other people. And I think it kind of distracts from them making their own message. I didn't really expect anybody to endorse me; I thought I should earn it." Straight talk, indeed. But within an hour, Tarryl Clark's campaign released a fundraising letter from Walz. Walz described Clark as an "amazing candidate" and asked for supporters to make a donation to her campaign to defeat Republican U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann. "Today, I'm proud to represent southern Minnesota in the United States Congress," he wrote. "And what would make me even more proud is to have a partner like Tarryl Clark… Please join me in supporting Tarryl Clark."

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
