WAUSAU, Wis. — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says the country must remake a "cumbersome" immigration system, but is disputing a published report suggesting he has endorsed a U.S. Senate-approved pathway to citizenship for those here illegally.
In an editorial board interview Tuesday, the potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate criticized barriers to foreign workers coming to the United States.
Walker spokesman Tom Evenson told The Associated Press on Wednesday the governor hasn't endorsed a specific policy but declined to say where the governor falls on the pivotal citizenship measure.
In the Daily Herald Media board (http://wrtnews.co/11gv3LP) video of the interview, Walker says "it makes sense" to permit immigrants already here illegally to pursue citizenship as part of a more-comprehensive fix.
Some conservatives oppose that on grounds it rewards unlawful behavior.
