WATERTOWN, Wis. — Gov. Scott Walker says he hopes "cooler heads will prevail" at the site of a proposed iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin.
Masked guards wearing camoflauge and armed with rifles were posted at the mining site last week, but then removed because the Arizona company did not have the proper Wisconsin licenses. The guards were hired by mining company Gogebic Taconite after protesters confronted mine workers last month. A Stevens Point woman has been charged with robbery by force in that incident in which she allegedly took one of the worker's camera.
Walker said Monday that there is no place for that type of behavior in Wisconsin. He says he spoke with the county sheriff and he believes law enforcement in the area can keep things under control.
