Wal-Mart opening set at Shingle Creek

A milestone is in sight for the new Shingle Creek Crossing. Wal-Mart officials have announced a Sept. 12 opening for its new store that will anchor the former Brookdale Mall site, 64 acres in the wedge between Interstate 94 and Hwy. 100.

The parcel, which was cleared last summer, was zoned to allow for retail, office and other uses.

In addition to the Wal-Mart and existing Sears and Kohl's stores, developers have received nonbinding agreements from businesses planning to occupy more than a dozen of the planned "junior anchor" and smaller storefronts.

Mike Sims, principal with Mid-America Real Estate Minnesota, the developer's leasing company, said he could not yet release the names of those additional businesses; they will be made public in the fall. Construction of the satellite buildings also will begin at that time, he said.

The nearly 182,000-square-foot Wal-Mart is expected to employ about 300 people, both full and part time.
