Volleyball team wins opener

The Gophers volleyball team opened its season with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-16 victory over host Creighton in the Bluejay Invitational on Friday in Omaha.

Brook Dieter had 14 kills and Kyla Roehrig had eight kills to lead the Gophers, who are ranked No. 16. Lauren Gibbemeyer and Pamela Luiz each added seven kills.

The Gophers will play Texas A&M at noon and No. 21 LSU at 5:30 p.m. in the tournament today.

Etc. • The Thunder got a late goal from Nathan Knox and beat Miami FC 2-1 in Miami, keeping alive the hope of reaching the United Soccer League First Division playoffs.
