The Vikings added some much-needed depth to their offensive line by drafting Wake Forest guard Chris DeGeare with the 161st pick in the fifth round.
DeGeare, who is 6-3, 325 pounds, was projected as a "late draftable pick" by Pro Football Weekly.
DeGeare played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2005 and started at right guard against North Carolina State. He had 29.5 knockdown blocks in 396 snaps, according to PFW. The next season, DeGeare started all 14 games at right guard and had 56 knockdowns.
But in 2007, he started only eight of 13 games and was listed at 362 pounds. He missed a game because of a sprained knee. DeGearge, according to PFW, struggled in 2007 after his mother passed away and was academically ineligible in 2008. He was moved to left tackle and started all 12 games last season.
PFW on DeGeare's positives: "Flashes some straight-line power when a defender is in front of him. Can generate some movement and ride defenders when he gets his mitts on them. Good mass to stop a charge initially and can anchor and hold ground."
PFW on DeGeare's negatives: "Marginal technician -- too often bends at the waist, overextends and loses balance. Is not initially quick out of his stance. Plays too small. Not strong or powerful. Lacks the lateral agility and foot quickness to handle edge speed -- really struggled against North Carolina State DE Willie Young. Too light-hipped and cannot counter or adjust or function outside of a small area."
The Vikings next pick also will come in the fifth round at No. 167.
