The traveler: Maxine Saul of Lakeville.

The scene: During an early-morning game drive in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park in South Africa, Saul came upon this southern white rhino, whose "family was out taking baths in the mud, grazing and paying no attention to our vehicle," she wrote in an e-mail.

Trip tips: The long flight from Minnesota to South Africa is worth the effort. "Nothing is black and white in that country, and even though apartheid ended in 1994 with Nelson Mandela's election as president, racial inequality is still evident," she wrote. Yet, the people are friendly. "The first word we learned was 'ubuntu,' which means 'taking care of and watching out for each other.' South Africa is a magnificent country with rugged hills and a sky that seems to go on forever. The animal refuges and parks are not the only attraction," she continued. Beautiful wine estates and mountain scenery are less than an hour's drive from Cape Town. The country's Atlantic Coast offers spectacular scenery and soft sand beaches. "Read up on the country's interesting history and go there. You will love it," Saul predicted.

The equipment: "We were not allowed to get out of the vehicle, but the 22x zoom lens on my Panasonic Lumix Camera allowed me to get a very up-close-and-personal photo," Saul wrote.
