Victim of head-on crash ID'd as bakery employee

The SUV driver who was killed in Crystal when a minivan strayed into the wrong lane was identified Tuesday as Donald Petros, who helped run a family bakery in north Minneapolis.

The minivan was rounding a curve in Crystal on Sunday, when it hit Petros' sport-utility vehicle head-on, police said.

His wife, Ginny Petros, 66, was in the SUV and taken to North Memorial Medical Center with noncritical injuries, police said. The van's driver, Ricardo Navarro, 33, of Fridley, also was at North Memorial and is expected to survive.

The van was heading west on Bass Lake Road at about 8:45 a.m., when it went around the curve onto southbound Orchard Avenue, police said. The SUV was northbound on Orchard when the van crossed the center line.

There is no indication that alcohol played a role in the crash, police said.

The Petros family operates Butter Roll Bakery at the corner of West Broadway and Irving Avenue N.

"They are an institution there," said Ron Hicks, executive director of the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition. "They do more in sales to restaurants, hotels and so forth. They are open [for walk-in sales] until they sell out, and they often sell out."

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020. As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
