Calgary Flames veteran forward Daymond Langkow was struck by a puck on the back of the neck and left the ice on a stretcher here in the second period this afternoon.

Langkow was struck by a slap shot from teammate Ian White. It was a peculiar play because several events happened simultaneously to allow it to happen.

As White was taking his shot, Langkow was checked in front of the net by Wild defenseman Greg Zanon, fell forward and had his head bent down just as the puck was coming. It meant he was in perfect position to take the puck in the back of the neck while facing the blue line. He then fell forward, hitting his head onto the ice.

Langkow never seemed to move from his side on the ice. He was assisted by Wild doctors Sheldon Burns and Dan Peterson, both team's medical trainers and paramedics. He was removed on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

The Wild was up 3-1 5:20 into the period at the time. Thirty-two seconds after play resumed, Ian White, of all players cut it to 3-2.

I'll update Langkow's condition as soon as we receive something.

Update: From Calgary Flames PR told to me via Calgary Sun's Steve MacFarlane: Langkow has "all feeling and movement," and is at hospital for observation.
