Firearms deer season

Shooting starts Saturday, half hour before sunrise.

Deer numbers are up following three years of conservative harvest regulations.

Projected harvest of 200,000 whitetails would be 15 percent higher than 2016.

More chances via permit this year to shoot antlerless deer.

Forecast in the north projects snowy ground cover for first time in years.

CWD tests on opening weekend will be mandatory in 21 permit areas.

A January hunt proposed for three southeastern permit areas will not be conducted.
