Unusual champ Duluth Marshall joins usual crowd among jazz dance winners

Benilde-St. Margaret's and Maple Grove won again. Duluth Marshall overcame a power.

Maple Grove, Benilde-St. Margaret's and Duluth Marshall finished first in their respective classes Friday in the jazz competition of the state high school dance team tournament at Target Center.

Class 3A: Maple Grove finished first and won its second title in three years. Eastview was the runner-up and Wayzata finished third.

Class 2A: Benilde-St. Margaret's won its second consecutive title. It's the eight title for the program, which also won in 1985, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2014. Totino-Grace finished second and St. Cloud Cathedral finished third.

Class 1A: Duluth Marshall finished first and ended the two-year championship reign of Yellow Medicine East, which finished third. Aitkin was the runner-up.

Format: Twelve teams in each class compete in a first round to determine six finalists, who dance again to determine the champion.

Up next: The tournament concludes Saturday with the high kick competition.
