Unrelenting Heat for the Pacific Northwest

July 28, 2009 at 3:25PM

Monday brought extreme heat and several new record highs to the PacificNorthwest. Record highs were established at Portland and Quillayute, with highsof 103 and 86 respectively. Believe it or not, temperatures are expected to beEVEN HIGHER across much of the region on Tuesday. Similar to Monday, the areasmost likely to reach or exceed their record highs for July 28 are west of theCascades in Washington and Oregon.Aside from record highs, this warm air mass has set records for the warmestLOW temperatures on Monday. In Salem, Ore., the low temperature was 70 degreeson Monday morning. Record high minimum temperatures are also likely Tuesdaynight and Wednesday night in many of the same areas. This is important to notebecause a lack of significant cooling at night can amplify the effects of theheat on people.

It is extremely important to seek relief from the heat wherever possible.

Numerous air conditioned shelters will be open for use in Portland and othercities in the I-5 corridor. Some public pools will also have extended hours dueto the excessive heat. Also remember to drink plenty of water and wear lightclothing. Avoid strenuous activities during the afternoon hours, and NEVER,EVER leave children and pets inside a parked car, even for a few minutes.
