Unprecedented Rainfall in Florida

May 21, 2009 at 7:25PM

I can't count the number of times that I have been burned by Mother Natureafter making some basic statement about the weather. For instance, during thefirst week of May, I discussed how dry the month always is. Shortly after thatfact had been brought to the table, the deluge hit.Take my word for it, the rainfall Florida has received since Monday isunprecedented for May. Latest reports indicate that there has been 12 to 22inches of rain in and around the Daytona Beach area, and it continues to comedown. So far, the greatest rainfall has occurred in the section of Florida fromMelbourne to Jacksonville, which includes the area in and around Orlando.

Elsewhere, rainfall has been more sporadic, but 1- to 2-inch downpours haveoccurred.

The overall rainfall pattern across Florida will change little throughFriday. In other words, the most persistent rain will be on the East Coast, while the western and southern portions of the state experience sporadic heavystorms. In general, however, rainfall will be less intense from this point on,since the storm center is drifting slowly away.
