Amount raised: A record $94.9 million, up from $89.5 million in 2007.

Donors: About 143,000 individuals and firms gave to the United Way through gifts and 2,400 workplace pledge drives.

Past campaigns: Except for 2002, 2003 and 2006, donations rose every year since the Minneapolis and St. Paul United Way agencies merged in 2001, when they raised $85.4 million.

Where money goes: More than 1.7 million people get help through about 200 agencies that receive United Way funding. About 80 percent of the money will go to the Agenda for Lasting Change, which focuses on 10 targeted areas including hunger, homelessness, health care, access to education and family financial problems.

Report on progress: The United Way will report in May how it is meeting goals in four of the 10 areas.

Looking ahead: The 2009 campaign could be difficult if economic problems continue. For the next six months, United Way officials will seek major donations and pledges from corporations and wealthy individuals before the fall campaign begins.
