OTTAWA – Minnesota United FC lost 1-0 to the second-year Ottawa Fury FC on Saturday in the North American Soccer League.
Striker Tom Heinemann scored the match's lone goal in the 68th minute before an announced crowd of 5,093 at TD Place. He beat a Loons defender to score.
The host team had an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Fury (1-1-1) put the ball in the net on a corner kick at 36 minutes of the first half, but the goal was disallowed because of an offsides call.
Earlier, Loons keeper Sammy Ndjock made a great diving save in the 21st minute on a free kick.
Kalif Alhassan created the best chance for United late in the match. He put a cross in front of the net, but a Fury defender blocked the pass.
"We don't need to motivate our players for a game like this one," Ottawa coach Marc Dos Santos before his team's home opener. "… Minnesota [was] the 2014 regular-season champions."
United (0-1-1) is winless in two road games this season and has not scored.
