Minnesota United FC defeated host St. Louis FC 2-0 on Wednesday in a third-round match of the U.S. Open Cup. Kevin Venegas scored the first goal in the 69th minute, Jack Blake the second in stoppage time.

Last year the Loons of the NASL lost to St. Louis FC, a member of the United Soccer League, 2-1 on penalty kicks at the same stage of U.S. Soccer's knockout tournament.

In the next round, United will host Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer on June 15 in Blaine.

"Absolutely great win," United coach Carl Craig. "It's a tough place to come play. St. Louis a very organized team with some skilled players.

"After the first half we reminded ourselves that we can play football. With the two losses behind us it was weighing on our minds, but history is history."
