Hillel at the University of Minnesota is putting its own spin on American Idol — holding the annual fundraiser event known as "Semitic Idol" tonight.

The musical concert between local cantors and students with American Idol-style commentary is being hosted at B'nai Emet Synagogue in St. Louis Park.

Cantors Barry Abelson (Temple Israel), Art Shragg (B'nai Emet) and Jennifer Strauss-Klein (Mt. Zion) compete for bragging rights as the Twin Cities best cantor, as judged by Twin Cities comedians: Dylan Fresco Jerry Siegel and Laura Thorne.

The event put on by the U's Jewish Student Center features songs performed by each of the cantors as well as a finale featuring all three together.

The Semitic Idol event raises money for programming for Jewish students at the university. For tickets and more details, check out www.semiticidol.com.
