Typhoon Kompasu Steams towards Korea

Typhoon Kompasu will churn north from the East China Sea to a stormy landfallin western Korea, possibly near Seoul, by early Thursday, EDT.Kompasu will unleash damaging winds near its landfall in southwestern NorthKorea or northwestern South Korea.

The storm will also unload 4 to 8 inches of rain and threaten flooding alongits northeastward path across the Korea Peninsula.

As of early Wednesday, EDT, Typhoon Kompasu packed 95-knot highest sustainedwinds. By late morning, winds lessened to 80 knots as the eye of the stormreached within 190 miles south-southwest of Seoul, South Korea.

Accelerating towards the north-northwest, the storm's forward speed rose to 24mph.

Impact with land will drastically weaken Kompasu before it sweeps across theSea of Japan to Japan later in the week. At this time, Kompasu may longer be anamed tropical cyclone.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Tropical Storm Lionrock lingered off western Taiwan andthe southeast mainland of China.

Tracking north-northwestward with top winds of 60 to 65 mph, Lionrock was ontarget for a rain-soaked landfall in Fujian, China, by early Thursday morning,EDT.
