Two die in separate Friday morning crashes

A 42-year-old Little Falls man died and three others were injured Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Cass County near Leader, Minn.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office said the head-on crash occurred shortly before 7 a.m. The driver of one of the vehicles, identified as Erik Mathison, died at the scene, the Sheriff's Office reported. A juvenile passenger in the car was transported to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale with unspecified injuries. The 19-year-old driver and a 22-year-old passenger in the other vehicle were taken to Lakewood Health System Hospital in Staples with noncritical injuries.

In another two-vehicle crash, an 11-year-old girl died Friday afternoon of injuries suffered earlier in the day in Chisago County.

The collision, which is still under investigation, happened about 8:30 a.m. Friday at the intersection of County Roads 12 and 20 in Chisago Lakes Township.

A passerby performed CPR on the child before emergency workers arrived. She was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where she died shortly before 3 p.m. Her name has not been released.
