Head trainer Rick McWane announced before Monday's game that outfielder Jason Kubel is headed back to the Twin Cities to be examined by team doctors after experiencing continued discomfort in his left foot.
``He doesn't think he's back to square one (but) he still has some discomfoert when he;s cutting,'' McWane said, ``It is not as bad as it was initally but he didn't think he was going to play in the next 3-4 days, so instead of having him sit down there we decided to bring him back here so our doctors can look at him first hand.''
There are no plans for a MRI exam, but the doctors might decide to have one. The Twins hope that Kubel will run without toomuch pain in a few days and head back out on his minor league rehabilitation assignment.
Outfielder Delmon Young (right foot sprain) was scheduled to be the desgnated hitter Monday night for Class AAA Rochester and he begins a rehab assignment.
Outfielder Denard Span (concussion) hit in the cage then went on field to play catch and get some running in.
``We're working on him to just get him out there three or four days in a row.'' Gardenhire said.
Young has a chance to return right after the All-Star break. Kubel is next in line. Span is out indefinitely. And Justin Morneau is out until mid-August after having a herniated disc fragement removed from his next last week.
Glen Perkins, who has appeared in four of the last five games, is not available today. So Jose Mijares could be called on to face a lefty late in the game.
