Twins postgame: Parmelee, Towles, Doyle, Dozier

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. -- Chris Parmelee and J.R. Towles each hit a two-run homer, and Terry Doyle pitched two scoreless innings Sunday, as a split-squad Twins team defeated the Rays 5-3 at Charlotte Sports Park.

The key developments:

* Doyle, the second overall selection in last December's Rule 5 draft, didn't allow a hit, but he walked one and hit a batter. He had a solid first inning but kept falling behind in the second. He works quickly but said he started rushing his delivery in the second inning. He has a smooth delivery and throws a lot of sinkers. One scout had Doyle's sinker clocked at 86-87 mph, but Doyle is a 6-4 righthander who typically gets stronger as the year progresses. Results-wise, he picked up right where he left off from the Arizona Fall League, where he went 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA in eight starts.

* Alexi Casilla went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored.

* Brian Dozier replaced Jamey Carroll at shortstop and turned two nice double plays with Casilla. Dozier went 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a ground out.

* Parmelee, who had two hits in Saturday's exhibition opener, continues to impress the Twins staff. Bench coach Scott Ullger said Parmelee wants to get better and asks good questions.

* Starting catcher Drew Butera went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a lino-cut to left field. Towles replaced him behind the plate and came up in a big spot in the ninth inning. With the score tied 3-3, the Rays inserted former Mariners RHP Josh Lueke, and Towles launched a ball to right field, into the wind. The ball carried over the wall for a home run.

Towles is a .187 career major league hitter, but his career minor-league average is .295. He's battling Butera for a backup catching spot.
