TWINS UPDATE

The Twins begin a stretch in which they play 14 consecutive games against American League East opponents, including seven against the Yankees. The Twins were 3-4 against the Yankees last season, but this has been a lopsided series. The Twins are 23-67 against the Yankees, including playoffs, under manager Ron Gardenhire. … Clete Thomas has hit home runs in two of his past three games, but he has also been functional as the leadoff hitter, batting .283 in that spot. … Oswaldo Arcia batted .329 in June. … Gardenhire gets a chuckle over claims that he teaches hitters to shoot balls the other way and pitchers to focus on contact. "I don't mind strikeouts, I really don't," he said. "I don't mind home runs. I'm pretty happy with all of that."

YANKEES UPDATE

Pettitte is 12-5 with a 3.32 ERA in his career against the Twins and is undefeated in his past 12 starts against them, including the postseason. During that span he is 10-0 with a 2.53 ERA. … The Yankees were set to arrive in the Twin Cities late after losing 4-2 Sunday night in Baltimore, and they could have a three-man bench because position players they would like to call up are injured or are just coming off injuries at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. … The Yankees rotation has scuffled some. Pettitte has had back problems. Hughes was 1-4 with a 4.55 ERA in June. Sabathia has not been pleased with how he has performed; he took a no-hitter into the sixth before losing to the Orioles on Friday.
