Twins look back tonight -- and ahead

Old uniforms, new players will dominate discussion as Twins try to sweep two-game home set with Brewers

June 5, 2014 at 10:45PM

The powder blue uniforms are back tonight. The Twins are wearing their 1980s throwbacks against their former American League rivals, the Brewers, who are in the old Molitor-era glove-and-ball uniforms. For those of us who were around when these were the standard uniforms, it's really easy to imagine Kirby Puckett and Robin Yount in the lineups tonight.

It's funny that the Twins would hold Turn Back the Clock Night, since today the focus is so much on the team's future. The Twins will add a future Puckett or Johan Santana, they hope, around 6:30 p.m., when they select fifth in the amateur draft. Asked for his opinion on who the team should select, manager Ron Gardenhire joked, "Whoever is closest to the majors."

The Twins have a couple of first-round picks in their lineup tonight, in Joe Mauer and Trevor Plouffe. The latter will serve as the designated hitter, just in an effort, Gardenhire said, to keep backup infielder Eduardo Nunez fresh.
