The Twins continue making waves on the waiver wire in search of something to help their 6-18 team.
The Twins designated outfielder Clete Thomas for assignment on Friday and have claimed outfielder Erik Komatsu from the Cardinals. Komatsu, 24, was drafted by the Brewers in the eighth round in 2008. He was selected by the Cardinals last winter in the Rule 5 draft.
In 348 minor league games, Komatsu has a .302 batting average with 24 home runs and 166 RBI. His best season was 2010, when he went .323-5-63 with a .413 on base percentage while at High-A Brevard County. He can run and has played all three outfield positions, but never played above Class AA before joining the Cardinals.
In 15 games with the Cardinals, Komatsu batted .211 (4-for-19) with two walks and three runs scored.
Thomas was claimed off waivers from Detroit on April 14. In 12 games with the Twins, he batted .143 with one double, one home run, 4 RBI and 16 strikeouts. His lack of contact was glaring.
Sean Burroughs, by the way, cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to Class AAA Rochester.
Rene Tosoni recently returned to Rochester's lineup after recovering from a lacerated right finger. And Brian Dinkelman is still on the disabled list. If one of those two would have been healthy (and sharp), they probably would have been options for a call-up.
Instead, the Twins are riding the waves of the of the waiver wire in search of....something.
